CAVOODLES

Cavoodles are a very highly sought after breed - and for good reason.  They make excellent family pets and are particularly good with young children or those who are a little nervous around dogs.

They don't require a lot of exercise, but will happily go for walks, chase a ball and socialise well with other dogs.  They love company - whether it be with the family or with another furry friend.

A Cavoodle is a term used to describe a "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel" mixed with a "Poodle" (whether it be Toy, Miniature or Standard).  We concentrate on Toy Cavoodles because we have found in our years that this size tends to be most popular in todays society.

Their low allergenic coats make them ideal pets for those that suffer from allergies.

Having bred pure Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, we have always had a soft spot for this breed.  We knew that we could trust the dogs around our children and enjoyed the beautiful bond that they created. The main downside of the breed, aside from genetic issues such as degenerative myelopathy, hernias and heart murmurs, was the fact that they shed so much hair in our house.  This meant clothes and furniture required lots of attention!

My aunty owned a family pet shop in the 1990's where they started to sell Cavalier cross Poodles.  This breed became so popular that they decided to put a name to it - the "Cavoodle".  Since then the name has spread and many people now enjoy the advantages of having the nature of the cavalier, with the intelligence of the poodle and generally low to no shed coat.  Not to mention their adorable teddy bear features!

Cavoodles do not require a large backyard, however we still recommend they have at least some grassed outdoor area to access.  Like any dog, they do love company.  If you work during the day and cannot spend as much time with your pup as needed, then it may be a good idea at looking down the track to have 2 dogs.  They are naturally pack animals and enjoy company.

Most Cavoodles are very alert and will alert you when someone is knocking at the door.  They are not typically escape artists however they do love to chase birds - and this tendency can be replaced with chasing a ball if encouraged.

I am more than happy to chat to anyone interested in possibly bringing a Cavoodle in to their homes to make sure that they will be a good fit!

THE CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL:

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are one of the most popular pure bred dogs.  They are wonderful with children of all ages and other dogs.  They are very affectionate and love human interaction and attention.  They are not known to be the most intelligent of dogs, simply because their friendly and eager to please nature overrides any 'street smart' behaviours.  They have a strong instinct to hunt and will chase things such as balls - or low flying birds!  They have beautiful soft and smooth coats, with long ears and feathering around their tummies, legs and feet.  However, as a pure bred will shed a lot of hair.  They come in four colours; Blenheim (red and white), Ruby (red), Tri Colour (black, tan and white) and Black and Tan.  Pure Cavaliers As a pure bred they are considered a "toy" size breed, averaging 6-8kg's and standing at about 13inches tall.

THE POODLE:

Poodles are well known for their high level of intelligence (ranked second in pure dog breeds) and low shed coat.  They are often referred to as hypoallergenic - and in most cases are great for those who suffer from allergies.  They do shed hair, however unlike other breeds, this hair does not typically fall to the ground, instead gets caught up in surrounding curls.  Hence the importance to groom them regularly.

They are slightly more reserved than the fun loving Cavaliers, so bring a nice sensible balance when mixed to create the Cavoodle.  A Toy Poodle averages 10inches high and 4kgs.  Miniature Poodles are around 11-15inches and 8kgs, while Standard Poodles are around 20 inches and 20kgs fully grown.

Height weight of Cavoodles:

When mixing two breeds of slightly differing heights and weights, we go on an averaging system of the two. Toy Cavoodles average approximately 6-10kgs and 11-13 inches tall to the shoulder blade.

COAT AND COLOURS OF CAVOODLES:

Cavoodles are highly sought after by those who are wanting a dog with as close to a hypoallergenic coat as possible, but are attracted to the wonderful nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.  When you are mixing one breed which will quite noticeably drop a lot of hair, with one who does not, there are never any 100% guarantees.  However, from my years in experience breeding this combination I am able to give a fairly accurate idea of how the puppies coats will develop.

The colours cavoodles include; light gold, gold, dark gold, ruby, black, black and tan and sable.  Each of these colours can also have white features.  My Cavoodles are generally varying shades of gold and ruby.  Please do note that most pups will lighten in colour to some extent as they grow.

TEMPERAMENT AND SUITABILITY:

Cavoodles suit pretty much anyone wanting a very cute, happy dog.  They make the perfect family pet, particularly for those with babies or small children.  They are wonderful with other dogs and are very social.

They can be quite active, or are just as happy to be curled up on the couch or stretched out on the floor.

Having the Poodle in them means they will be slightly better at being a guard dog, and instead of licking unwanted guests, may bark a little to scare them off!
